Tempest is our flagship annual event, attracting players from all over the world to compete for top place. We have previously hosted both DipCon and World DipCon at our Tempest in a Teapot competition, and are frequently one of the largest face-to-face events held in the U.S. of A. This year's event will take place at the Westin Tysons Corner in Falls Church, Virginia. The hotel is offering an event rate of $99 a night - just specify PTKS Tempest event when booking your room. Questions about this event should be directed to Joe Wheeler, our Director of Tournaments. If you desire aid in finding roommates, the Tempest staff will be happy to assist you.
There are three airports to fly in, for your convenience: IAD is the closest, and DCA is nearly as close; BWI is appreciably further, but often cheaper, and actually not terribly inconvenient either for a pickup or to take mass transit from.
Tysons Corner is a local shopping mecca, within easy striking range of the mass of tourist attractions in our nation's capital. Saturday evening has some fun events scheduled, but nothing scored, so feel free to take time off and see museums, monuments, government buildings, or whatever else strikes your fancy... if you desire assistance in choosing how to allocate your time, the Tempest staff will be happy to help!
The scoring system used at Tempest is the Carnage scoring system: 7000 pts for first place board position, 6000 pts for second place board position....down to 1000 pts for last place board position, plus 1 pt for each SC owned at the end of the game
Players are encouraged to bring other games they enjoy, as we will have a massive space, more than sufficient to hold non-Diplomacy action running concurrent with the diplomacy tournament.
Register early because the rate will go up on August 1, 2009. Note: The Bring-A-Friend option lets you register yourself and one other person (who must not have attended Tempest in the past) for only $25 each. Of course, how you decide to split the cost is up to you - you have 15 minutes to negotiate.
